The Tolcarne Inn is a 300-year-old pub, sheltering by the sea wall in Newlyn – home to one of the UK’s most important fishing fleets. Chef Ben Tunnicliffe eschewed the fine-dining label (after having held a Michelin Star and launching the food offering at gourmet hotel The Scarlet) and opened his own pub in 2012, opting instead to serve supremely fresh seafood in a humble setting.
Expect a daily-updated blackboard menu showcasing the catch of the day (Ben sources his fish from neighbouring Newlyn Fish Market, or direct from day boat fishermen). Other seasonal ingredients from local community farms and market gardens complement the starring seafood elements, with Ben and Head Chef Matt Smith crafting simple dishes designed to let the quality of the produce speak for itself.
In the summer, the terrace at the Tolcarne Inn is the place to feast on bowls of mussels and fresh lobster, while during winter the pub’s fireside tables play host to dog walkers, real ale drinkers and foodies, all soaking up the atmosphere.
