We're Dreaming of The Post-lockdown Spa Treatments...

Written and curated by Lucy Studley

Winter is always a tough time for physical and mental health but, for obvious reasons, this year is proving more challenging than ever. We’d all love something in the diary to look forward to, and we suspect that soulful, nourishing experiences – be they eating in a great restaurant or visiting a luxurious spa – will be top of the wish list post-lockdown.

We’ve recommended some of our favourite Cornish spa destinations to head to, when it’s safe to do so of course. Whilst we can’t tell you exactly when you’ll next be able to visit one of these fabulous coastal retreats, we can share expert recommendations for the best therapies to book when their lustrous doors finally reopen.

For this feature we asked Cornwall’s most experienced spa therapists to advise on their favourite treatments to rejuvenate and revive after the difficult winter. Here’s what they recommended:

Jubilee Pool Treatments

Women’s Balance (Chapel House, Penzance): Soothe The Soul

Rachel Lorente of Women’s Balance, which offers bespoke treatments at The Jubilee Pool and Chapel House boutique hotel in Penzance, says: “The last year has been an extremely difficult time for the vast majority of people. To help kick-start mental and physical rejuvenation, I recommend a gentle ritual to deeply soothe and ease away tension.”

Rachel’s ‘Soothe The Soul’ treatment combines a gentle full-body brush, a hot, flowing aromatherapy massage, and an Inlight organic facial combined with facial massage. It finishes with a foot massage; you’ll float out feeling strengthened and replenished.

This treatment takes place in the beautiful surroundings of Chapel House in Penzance, where understated luxury and soft, muted colours will cocoon you in tranquillity for an hour or two…

Spa Rhassoul

St Michael’s Resort & Spa: Moroccan Rhassoul Experience

Deputy Spa Manager, Joanne Martin, of St Michael’s Resort in Falmouth recommends a Moroccan Rhassoul Experience to help you remerge, post-lockdown.

“Our Moroccan Rhassoul Experience is the perfect post-winter, full body treat. Enjoy the use of a dedicated treatment room featuring a traditional Moroccan steam chamber. Exfoliate with a seasonally scented scrub, then wrap yourself up in heated clay and allow the steam to deeply warm and purify your skin. Finish with a warm shower to remove the applied mud, and then cold jets to close the pores and a body lotion to leave your skin feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.”

St Michael’s Spa includes a hydrothermal pool and a spa garden featuring a hot tub and a Finnish barrel sauna; once those warmer days arrive this is where you’ll find us!

Cornwall Spa

The Headland Hotel & Spa: The Headland Wave Ritual

The whole team at The Headland Hotel & Spa were united in their recommendation of The Headland Wave Ritual.

“This is our ultimate treatment. Beautifully calming and relaxing, it’s 85 minutes of carefully targeted relaxation, including a foot ritual, a full body brush, a wavestone massage, a scalp massage and a mini-facial. Working to detoxify, destress and soothe the mind, body and soul from head to toe, this would be the perfect way to mark a fresh start.”

Complimentary use of the Headland’s impressive spa facilities are included with this treatment, and the hotel’s new Aqua Club is a destination in itself.

The Scarlet Hotel Cornwall

The Scarlet Hotel: And So It Begins

The dedicated spa team at The Scarlet Hotel, Cornwall’s luxurious eco-hotel perched above Mawgan Porth Beach, have designed a special treatment to help set positive intentions for new beginnings.

“Our ‘And So It Begins’ Spa Day is a wonderful reawakening, therapeutic experience to look forward to in the spring. It combines indulgent massage (including an ayurvedic head, neck and arm massage, and a reflexology-style lower body massage) and the immersive experience of our clifftop hot tubs, but also promotes introspection and time to reflect – helping to build positivity and resilience.”

This is a full-day package and includes lunch in the restaurant and full use of the gorgeous spa facilities overlooking the ocean.

These hand-picked experiences will lift your spirits and literally take some of the weight off your shoulders; devote some time to your own wellbeing after these difficult months and you will be well-rewarded.
