During these testing times, shopping at local farm shops is the perfect opportunity to show support for independents. Knowing that eating fresh food can improve the mood of you and, crucially, those around you, may be equally enticing. Here’s a look at our pick of farm shops local to Devon and Cornwall whose doors remain open.
Trethillick Farm, Padstow, PL28 8HJ
Open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am till 4pm, Padstow Farm Shop is up and running, allowing two customers inside the shop at any time. Inside full stocks of Cornish produce are available. Free-range meats, lots of fruit & veg, hot St. Agnes pasties and sausage rolls. If that’s not enough, check their socials to see when local fishermen are selling freshly caught crab and lobster on site.
2 Smithfield Court, Newquay, TR8 4PX
For those in the Newquay area, the family-run Trevilley Farm shop continues to be open Monday to Saturday for its normal hours of 9.30am till 5.30pm. Freshly baked bread from Trevilley farm is in stock, as are cakes, Cornish teas, biscuits and bakes. Baskets are full of fruit & veg and shelves stocked with jams, marmalades, chutneys and pickles that have been made on site. Local meat and other essentials are also available- such as Cornish Orchards cider.
Although not strictly a farm shop, Ashburton Delicatessen is a beautiful little indie shop on the edge of Dartmoor, open for business 9am-5pm. There is a huge selection of local cheeses, ham and salamis, quiches and pastas available, with frozen bread, gluten free bread and savouries in stock for home cooking. Orders placed on the phone by 11am can be collected after 3pm.

Higher Fingle Farm, Crockernwell, EX6 6NP
Oinkers is open as usual, Tuesday to Saturday, 8am till 5pm, but like many other farm shops is restricting customers to two at a time. Lots of local products are in store; fruit & veg, eggs, cakes, honey, home cooked ready meals and, as the name suggests, local meats. Ring and place an order for pick-up or alternatively there’s a weekly delivery around Tedburn St Mary, Cheriton Bishop, Whitestone, Teign Valley and Exeter.
Caradon Farm, Pensilva, PL14 5PJ
The gorgeous outdoor pods that overlook the rolling Cornish countryside usually spring to mind when we think of Trevallicks, but luckily they also have a farm shop that still remains open. They are running a delivery only service, taking orders from 9am till 1pm and couriering between 2pm and 5pm, but they might need 24 hours notice for some products. Artisan breads, Rodda’s dairy products, Cornish eggs & honey, frozen Helluva pasties and fresh fruit, veg and meat are all in stock. A wide selection of Cornish gins are also available. Perfect.
Heligan, St Ewe, Saint Austell, PL26 6EN
Lobbs is also open, however customers must make a list which is then collected by staff. You can also ring ahead for collection which might be easier. Besides their normal butchery, delicatessen and cupboard staples, homemade oven-bake ready meals are also available including cottage pie, lasagne, beef & ale pie and fish pie. Sweet crumbles and pies- apple, cherry, gooseberry and rhubarb- are also on their shelves, because isolating doesn’t mean missing out of course.
Hawthorn Gardens, Stockleigh, Pomeroy, Crediton, EX17 4BH
Home-grown fruit and veg, cheeses, Creedy Carver poultry and meats from Cox’s butchers are all available. Baked snacks, pies, breads and cakes are usually in stock and there are Lyme Bay wines and Sampford Orchard ciders on the shelves. Opening hours are now 9am-3pm with two people allowed in to shop at any time.
Dean Court Bungalow, Lower Dean, Buckfastleigh, TQ11 0LT
The Lower Dean farm shop specialises in using local traders for unusual gifts, fresh produce and locally sourced and fully traceable, top quality meat. Outside its in-store butchery expect store cupboard groceries, bakery items, dairy products and fresh fruit and vegetables (they also have gluten-free bread in their freezer). Choose beer, cider, wine and/or gin from their wide selection every day except Sunday when they’re closed. In this moment of crisis, the shop is delivering groceries for free to those most in need.
For bits and pieces:
Cornish Moo – Fresh Cornish Milk is available direct from the dairy farm from their self service vending machine. The team at the farm sterilise contact points regularly. Open 7am-9pm at their farm in Launceston.
Orchard Farm – Organic, free range eggs are available to pick up £2.80 per dozen fresh from the Stokeinteignhead farm.
South Devon Chilli Farm – The shop is closed, but online orders for chilli preserves, sauces, chocolates, seeds and plants are still going ahead. Don’t feel guilty if you pick one of everything, they say variety is the spice of life.
